Description
Its name probably derives from Victor, winner of the other close peaks. Monte Vettore, seen from above, is horseshoe shaped; the horseshoe, starting from Forca Viola in the western side (1936 a.s.l.), goes on through Redentore peak (2448 m a.s.l.).
A Monte Vettore peculiarity is definitely the so different appearance between Umbrian side and that of the Marche. In the west side, the mountain rises from the Pian Grande of Castelluccio for almost 1000 meters, completely bare of vegetation, and even massive, the slope preserves its sweetness, only broken, at an altitude of 2000 - 2100 meters, by a horizontal fracture (one fault of 4 km), the so called “Fairy road ” and the big Eagle Rock.
In the east side, in the Marche, Monte Vettore appears completely different, a huge rocky mass that hangs over the below villages of Pretare, Piedilama, creating a clear Dolomite landscape.
